WHAT IS STERLING SILVER 925?

925 Sterling Silver is an alloy of silver containing 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper. The copper is added to give strength to the silver.

WHAT IS PLATED JEWELLERY?

Plated jewellery is made of a solid, inner material such as silver, and an outer material such as yellow or rose gold, rhodium or ruthenium. There are different standards of plating, from very thin 'flash' plating to heavier 'vermeil' plating.
Over time all plating types will wear away but those with a thicker plating will last much longer. The wear of plating can produce interesting effects that some people like but items can always be re-plated to bring them back to their original look.
A lot of jewellers can provide a re-plating service and we can also re-plate your items for a small fee. Please contact us if you need help with this.

WHAT IS GOLD VERMEIL?

Gold vermeil (pronounced 'ver-may') is an industry term for a sterling silver item which has a thicker coating of gold on top. Vermeil can be a combination of a sterling silver base with a gold, rose gold or white gold plate. To be considered vermeil the sterling silver must be coated in at least 9 carat gold and be at least 1.5 micrometres thick.

Magnetic Deluxe uses 18ct gold vermeil at 2.5 microns thick across all ranges.

WHAT IS OXIDIZED SILVER?

Oxidizing is a popular surface treatment used to create a dark grey to black tone on silver. It is not as durable as plating so will wear quicker but it can produce an interesting worn look depending on the design. As it wears raised areas become more silver leaving any recessed or engraved areas dark, giving a nice contrast. If your oxidization has worn off and you would like to refresh it, we are happy to re-oxidise it for a small fee.
